After our morning adventure, we went to Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters to feed stingrays and learn about marine life, on another trip we even went to Oakvale Wildlife Park to meet koalas, kangaroos, and other adorable animals. You can choose between the two based on which interests you more!

Nearby cafés in Nelson Bay or Anna Bay offer fresh seafood, burgers, or light bites, many with waterfront views to enjoy while soaking in the coastal atmosphere.

Evening
In the evening, you can walk to the area behind the Sunset Villas or wander towards Sunset Beach—this spot is famous for golden light and the chance to spot koalas lounging in the trees. Truly magical.

Wrap up your first day with dinner and drinks at Cheeky Dog – Bannisters, Soldiers Point, which is a must! It was our first time there, and we got the Ragu Arancini, Prawns Linguini, Prosciutto pizza, and fried Banoffee Pie for dessert!

Then there’s Birubi Beach, located in Anna Bay. This beach is renowned for its golden sands and serves as the gateway to the Stockton Sand Dunes, one of the largest moving dune systems in the Southern Hemisphere. You can go sandboarding, ride a quad bike, or walk along the dunes for incredible views, especially during sunset.

After exploring the beaches and lookouts, you’ll definitely want to treat yourself to some good food and luckily. Port Stephens boasts numerous excellent dining options, ranging from laid-back beach cafes to scenic waterfront restaurants.

I went to the Crest Birubi Beach Cafe. The ocean view is unbeatable, and their special chilli omelette was packed with flavour, definitely worth trying if you like a little spice in your morning meal! Their avocado smash was another standout, fresh, creamy, and perfectly balanced with a touch of lemon.

It’s one of those places where you could easily spend a few hours just soaking in the sea breeze. Another lovely place to dine is Restaurant 2317, set right by the water. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed breakfast or brunch with a view. I highly recommend their creamy mushroom dish, which is rich and ideal after a morning walk by the bay.

If you’re around Nelson Bay or Shoal Bay, you’ll also find plenty of local cafes, fish and chip shops, and small eateries serving fresh seafood and great coffee.

  If you’re driving from Sydney, take the M1 Pacific Motorway towards Newcastle and follow the signs for Nelson Bay – the main town in Port Stephens.

• By Public Transport: You can take a train from Sydney Central to Newcastle Interchange, then take the bus to Port Stephens from Newcastle. The entire journey is extremely affordable with an Opal card—typically around $7 in total for roughly five hours of travel.
