What is Scenic World?

Scenic World has been privately owned and operated by the Hammon Family over three generations since 1945, when Harry and his sister, Isobel Hammon, transformed the old coal mining track into what we know today as the world’s steepest railway!
Over time, they added the cableways, broadwalks, and trails that now attract over a million visitors each year, making Scenic World Australia’s most visited, privately-owned tourist attraction!
Getting to Scenic World – Take the BMT train from Central Station. From Kattomba station, catch the 68G or 686G bus, which will take you directly to Scenic World, or use your Blue Mountains Hop on Hop Off pass!
If you are driving, head west on the M4 from the city, and you’ll reach Katoomba in about 90 minutes.
Things to Do In Scenic World
Scenic World truly offers adventures for all ages with its four main attractions: the 3 rides – Scenic Railway, the Scenic Skyway, the Scenic Cableway, and the beautiful Scenic Walkway. And now, they also offer the world’s first rooftop cable car experience, Beyond Skyway!
Scenic Railway 🛤️

As per the Guinness Book of World Records, the Scenic Railway is the steepest passenger railway in the world, with a 52-degree incline on its track! The ride covers 310 meters at a speed of 4 m/s for a 206m vertical drop and goes both uphill and downhill.
It was originally built in the 19th century to transport coal, only to be later transformed into a passenger train in 1945. The seats face downhill, and we recommend experiencing it that way, going toward the Jamison Valley.
The Scenic Railway is a short two-minute ride and a fun way to get your Scenic World experience kicked off! The train departs every 10 minutes from both the top and bottom stations
Scenic Walkway 🌳

The Scenic Walkway is one of Australia’s longest elevated rainforest boardwalks, featuring a 2.4km trail that immerses you in lush greenery and native flora and fauna, some dating back to the Jurassic period!
There are several walking routes to choose from, depending on how much time you have: a short 10-minute walk connecting the Scenic Railway and Scenic Cableway, a 20-minute walk, or a more immersive 30-minute walk that includes stops at the Miner’s Hut and the Rainforest Room. We’ve done the longer walks in the past, and they’re a peaceful escape with fewer crowds.

The trail takes you through the site’s coal mining history with various artifacts, the original mine entrance, and bronze sculptures. There was a small kiosk selling ice cream when we visited too!
Scenic Cableway 🚠

The 545-metre Scenic Cableway is the steepest and largest aerial cable car in the Southern Hemisphere. This glass-covered aerial cable ride connects the Scenic World’s top station and the valley floor.
We fell in love with the views from here. Although the ride is relatively short, the views of the rock formations, the Three Sisters, and Orphan Rock are some of the best from the ride! We recommend going as close as you can to the top or bottom window toward the right side to enjoy this ride!
After the Scenic Walkway, you can come back to the top by this ride or by the Scenic Railway again!
Scenic Skyway 🚡
Stretching 720 meters across the valley and suspended 270 meters above the rainforest floor, the Skyway delivers unbeatable views of Katoomba Falls, the Three Sisters, and the vast Jamison Valley. You can also disembark at the Skyway’s east station to explore scenic lookouts and bushwalking trails leading to Echo Point.

SCENIC SKYWAY TIP
If you stand in the elevated middle section of the car, you can enjoy the electro-glass cabin floor that reveals the lush rainforest canopy beneath your feet! And on the left, you’ll see Katoomba falls!
Since opening in 1958 as Australia’s first cable car, the Scenic Skyway has remained an iconic experience in the Blue Mountains. Carrying up to 84 passengers every 10 minutes, it seamlessly connects Scenic World’s top station to the east station, where we recommend getting off to see the Katoomba Falls from the Price Henry Cliff Walk.

Beyond Skyway 🌄

If a glass-bottomed cabin 270 meters above the ground isn’t exciting enough, why not soak up 360-degree views of the Blue Mountains on top of the iconic Scenic Skyway? Beyond Skyway is a one-of-a-kind adventure, offering the world’s first rooftop cable car experience!

Once Scenic World closes for the day, you could join three other guests to harness up and step onto the Scenic Skyway, which will park mid-air in the Jamison Valley for your experience. From there, you’ll climb a ladder through the hatch and step onto the roof of the cabin, where nothing separates you from the vast wilderness stretching in every direction.

From this exhilarating vantage point, take in Katoomba Falls, the Three Sisters, Mount Solitary, and the vast Jamison Valley, all illuminated by the setting sun’s golden hues. While you can take your phone, our guide, Byron, was super friendly and helped us get some gorgeous photos to capture this experience together. To top it off, you can also enjoy a celebratory drink on the way back!
BEYOND SKYWAY REVIEW:
Our experience of Beyond Skyway was incredible. Watching the sky change colors over the Jamison Valley was something else. The staff was super friendly, and we had the best time. However, this is one of the more luxurious experiences in the Blue Mountains, and for more budget-conscious visitors, the other Scenic World rides would still offer a wholesome day as is!
🎫The Beyond Skyway experience costs $349 for adults and $329 for kids (10 and above), with 90-minute sessions (including up to 20 minutes on top) typically available Thursday to Saturday.
