ARE YOU WONDERING WHAT SHOULD BE ON YOUR SYDNEY BUCKET LIST?

Sometimes a single photo, the glimmer of the Harbour, the curve of Bondi Beach, or the Opera House sails at sunset, is enough to inspire a lifetime of wanderlust!

Sydney is one of the most beautiful and safest cities for solo travel in the world, and after living here for five years, I would argue that it only gets better the more you explore.

If you’re visiting this city for the first time, you’ll immediately fall in love with its majestic beaches, world-famous harbour, incredible natural wonders, and, of course, the two most iconic landmarks in Australia: the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. There’s so much to experience here that I couldn’t fit it all into one list!

I created this Sydney Bucket List to save you hours of research on the best things to do and where to eat. Everything is divided into sections: iconic must-dos, adventure, sightseeing, and food & drinks. You’ll also find a Sydney Bucket List Map further down to help you plan your adventure step-by-step.

Sydney Bucket List: The Iconics

Consider these your Sydney non-negotiables, no ifs no buts!

Sydney Bucket List: A view of the Opera House!

Undoubtedly, viewing the magic of theatre come to life in this World Heritage-listed piece of human design is a must-do in Sydney. It’s where outside-the-box thinking drives out-of-this-world results! Although you can admire its beauty from the outside, you’ll need to book a tour to go inside. You can choose a backstage VIP tour to see what’s behind the curtains, or book one that includes a ticket to a grand performance!

If you’ve heard of Vivid Sydney and happen to be here during the festival dates, I highly recommend staying to see the stunning projections of signature artworks on the sails of the Opera House!

Next up on your Sydney bucket list is watching a stunning sunset from the best lookout point in the city: Macquarie’s Chair! It’s a sandstone bench located in the Royal Botanic Gardens, which is one of the best spots to admire both the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House in a single frame, all day long! The peninsula where the chair sits is between Garden Island to the east and Bennelong Point (where the Opera House stands) to the west.

The chair was carved in 1810 by convicts, commissioned by Governor Lachlan Macquarie for his wife, Elizabeth. She loved this particular spot and would often sit here to gaze out over the harbour—hence the name! I definitely recommend snapping at least a dozen photos here and crossing this off your Sydney bucket list.

A couple looking over the scenic views of Sydney from the Pylon Lookout.

South Pylon Lookout is a budget alternative to the iconic Harbour BridgeClimb, located within the South-East Pylon of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. For under A$20, you will be viewing the Harbour Bridge, the Opera House, North Sydney, Luna Park, and the ever-evolving Barangaroo precinct! If you are visiting Sydney with your parents, I suggest skipping this, as you will have to ascend 200 steps to the Lookout!

Harbour BridgeClimb experience

I highly recommend climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge, it’s as fun at night (if not better) as during the day! This fully guided 3-hour adventure takes you up the bridge’s upper arch, all the way to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with one of the best 360-degree views in all of Sydney. The costs start at A$298, and yes, it’s a bit of a splurge—but a Bridgeclimb is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience as it’s one of the only bridges in the world to offer it, which is worth every dollar.

Grounds of Alexandria, the world's most Instagrammable cafe! A top Sydney bucket list item!

The Grounds of Alexandria is officially the world’s most Instagrammable place, and I couldn’t agree more! The café features stunning themed setups that change regularly. At the time of writing, the Snow White-themed Grounds of Alexandria seems like a perfect outing in May! I’ve always loved coming here for their top-quality ingredients and some of the best brewed coffee you’ll find in Sydney.

The venue is divided into several areas, including the café, garden, bakery, and even a charming little farmyard where kids can meet resident animals like goats, chickens, and pigs!

If you’ve ever seen photos of Sydney, chances are you’ve spotted the Bondi Icebergs Pool, it’s probably the most photographed ocean pool in Australia! It’s right at the southern end of Bondi Beach, and sometimes it lets you swim with waves crashing dramatically over. Entry is affordable (around $10 per adult and $7 for children), and there’s even a sauna to warm up afterwards. It’s an experience you can’t miss if you want to feel fully one with Sydney’s beach culture!

Adventurous Sydney Bucket List Items!

Are you ready to kick off the bucket list with some adventure?!

A couple looking over at a Giraffe at Taronga Zoo!

Just a 15-minute ferry ride from Circular Quay, Taronga Zoo is one of the most iconic wildlife experiences in Sydney. With unbeatable views of Sydney Harbour and over 5,000 animals from across the globe, it’s a must-do!

You’ll get the chance to see Australia’s most beloved animals up close: koalas, kangaroos, wombats, and platypuses, as well as exotic species like Sumatran tigers, Asian elephants, red pandas, and meerkats. Their conservation focus makes this more than just a zoo visit, it’s a learning experience about protecting endangered wildlife!

City buildings including the Sydney Tower Eye in Sydney's CBD. A Sydney bucket list view!
Destination NSW

If you want a jaw-dropping 360° view of Sydney, the Sydney Tower Eye is where you need to be. Standing 250 metres above street level, it’s the tallest building in the city, and the views stretch from the Blue Mountains in the west to Bondi Beach in the east on a clear day.

Inside the observation deck, you’ll find interactive screens to help you identify landmarks like the Opera House, Harbour Bridge, and Darling Harbour. It’s fully enclosed and great for all ages — no need to worry about the wind!

But if you’re feeling brave, go one step further with the SKYWALK — an open-air glass-floored platform that wraps around the outside of the tower. With a harness on and a guide by your side, you’ll be walking in the sky, literally!

A ferry ride to Manly is absolutely unmissable when you’re in Sydney. It’s one of the most beautiful ferry routes here and also a great alternative to experience Sydney Harbour without splurging on an expensive cruise.

The ferry departs from Circular Quay, and as you glide across the water, you’ll cruise right past the Opera House and under the Harbour Bridge. The ride itself is about 20–30 minutes and offers breathtaking views the entire way.

Ferries run very frequently throughout the day, and a one-way trip costs around $8 with an Opal card!

A bright red kayak floats on Sydney Harbour with a view of the Sydney Opera House, offering a unique and adventurous way to explore Kirribilli from the water

For a unique Sydney bucket list experience, I recommend grabbing a paddle and kayaking around the harbour with Sydney By Kayak! They have 1.5-hour tours where you can be in awe of the Opera House and city skyline as you swiftly move along the waters of Lavender Bay.

Hyper Karting is home to Australia’s longest indoor electric go-kart track, a fully virtual reality-based arena, and a mesmerising arcade room! Their state-of-the-art collection of electric go-karts and a rotatable racetrack is seriously pushing forward Australia’s tech and innovation. I highly recommend setting aside a fun day just for games here, you’ll seriously enjoy it! You’ll find Hyper Karting conveniently located on Level 5 of The Entertainment Quarter’s car park.

The hike from Bondi Beach to Coogee Beach stretches about 6 km, you’ll have one of Sydney’s most scenic coastal experiences doing it. If you’re working with limited time, you can easily cut the walk shorter by finishing at Bronte Beach or Clovelly Beach. The trail hugs the coastline, weaving in and out of clear blue bays like Tamarama Beach, Bronte Beach, and Clovelly Beach.

It usually takes around 1.5 to 2.5 hours to complete the walk, depending on you and how often you stop to admire the views! You can start from either Bondi or Coogee; there’s no “right” direction. Whichever way you go, finishing the walk with a relaxing beach day is the perfect reward!

If you’ve ever dreamed of surfing and find yourself in Sydney, there’s no better place to start than Bondi Beach, and no better team than Let’s Go Surfing, Bondi’s only officially licensed surf school. Since 1995, their passionate and experienced instructors have been changing lives one wave at a time.

Bondi is home to Australia’s oldest surf lifesaving club, beach bars and restaurants, cool urban shops, and hip weekend markets. They have a range of courses depending on your experience and age! Australia’s greatest surf experience on one of the world’s most iconic beaches, what are you waiting for?

A family stands in front of the iconic face entrance at Luna Park Sydney, a must-see attraction on any Sydney bucket list, with its whimsical design and vibrant colors set against a bright afternoon sky.
Sydney Bucket List/Luna Park

With its giant smiling face entrance and unbeatable harbourfront views, Luna Park is one of Sydney’s most iconic attractions. Inspired by New York’s Coney Island but undeniably Sydney at heart, this heritage-listed amusement park sits right on the edge of the harbour, with the Harbour Bridge towering overhead and the Opera House glinting across the water

Hop on the Ferris Wheel for sweeping views and snap a photo that’s guaranteed to become a family favourite. From the charming old-school Carousel to heart-racing rides that twist, turn, and soar through the air, everyone has something to enjoy here!

In 2025, we’re especially excited about the Stranger Things Experience, it’s a thrilling new addition to this year’s Vivid Sydney Ideas! I’ll admit, I visited Luna Park much later than I should have… but it was absolutely worth the wait!

Hot air balloon flying at sunset with a group of people onboard, colorful balloon, adventure, travel, scenic sky views, Hat Explores logo.

A hot air balloon ride is a staple Sydney bucket list item! I booked my mine with balloon Aloft, the longest running company in Australia! There’s something truly magical about watching the world wake up from a basket suspended beneath a massive balloon. Just 1.5 hours from Sydney, my very first hot air balloon ride in Camden Valley was very safe, and I highly recommend adding this to your adventure list!

Alternatively, you can also book a hot air balloon ride over the beautiful Hunter Valley, with the peaceful thrill of floating high above the countryside.

A whale taking a dip into the water

Whale season in Sydney usually kicks off in mid to late May, and it’s one of the world’s longest animal migrations that takes place. During this time, humpback whales begin their incredible migration north from Antarctica, and if you’re lucky, you can spot them right from the coast. North Head, Cape Solander, and Barrenjoey Lighthouse are some of the top vantage points!

For an even closer encounter, May also marks the start of whale watching cruises, with boats departing from Circular Quay and Darling Harbour. I recommend booking a cruise toward the end of May for the best chance of sightings- and it’s surprisingly affordable!

Views during Vivid Sydney, a perfect bucket list item in Sydney!
Credit: Destination NSW

Get ready, Vivid Sydney, the Southern Hemisphere’s largest festival, is back for its 15th year! Running from 23 May to 14 June, the 2025 theme, “Dream,” invites us to dream without limits, celebrating how imagination inspires connection, creativity, and innovation.

Over 23 dazzling days, Sydney will transform with grand art installations, 3d light projections, live music, thought-provoking talks, and unforgettable food experiences. I’ve been to Vivid four times now, and trust me, it just gets better every year!

Get your adrenaline pumping with one of Australia’s most thrilling animal encounters. Shark Dive Xtreme offers a rare chance to come face-to-face with incredible marine life, including Grey Nurse Sharks, Port Jackson Sharks, Wobbegongs, giant Stingrays, and more, all without a cage! It’s an unforgettable experience that brings you closer than ever to the ocean’s most fascinating creatures.

A girl in a red top is posing in front of a waterfallin Scenic World, Blue Mountains- a Sydney bucket list destination for many!

The Blue Mountains is the perfect day trip from Sydney if you’re craving a nature-filled escape, a bit of adventure, and lush greenery everywhere you look! Just a 90-minute drive from the city, this World Heritage-listed region makes for an unforgettable outing.

A couple all harnessed are looking over at the Kattomba hills

A visit to Scenic World lets you tick off some truly unique experiences you won’t find anywhere else! It’s is as close to an adventure park as you’ll find in the Blue Mountains. Here, you can soar above the forest on the Southern Hemisphere’s largest aerial cableway, ride the world’s steepest railway, and stroll along one of Australia’s highest rainforest boardwalks!

If you’re looking for a quick nature escape from the city, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park is one of the closest spots where you can swap buildings for bushland. It’s packed with coastal views, peaceful trails, and a deep connection to Aboriginal culture—don’t miss the ochre rock paintings along the Mackerel Trail.

For a proper hike, check out the Warrimoo Trails, they’re popular loop walks around 9–12 km long on the southern side of the park. Just a heads-up: a lot of the other tracks are one-way, so you’ll be walking the same path back. Worth planning ahead if that’s not your thing.

Not feeling a big hike? West Head Road runs right through the park and ends in some of the best views around. You can try the Beach Loop, the West Head Lookout Trail, or just wander to West Head Lookout, it’s only a 200-meter walk from the car park and totally worth it!

Sitting right in the middle of Sydney Harbour, Cockatoo Island is packed with history and great views. Once a convict gaol and later a shipyard, today it’s a fascinating place to explore with its UNESCO World Heritage-listed Convict Site, waterfront cafes, guided tours, camping, and heritage accommodation.

Known as Wareamah by Sydney’s First Nations people, Cockatoo Island is super easy to reach—just hop on a public ferry. The F3 and F8 services run daily from Circular Quay, Barangaroo, and a bunch of stops along the Parramatta River.

Sightseeing & Leisurely Sydney Bucket List Items!

This section is all about the relaxed experiences, giving you time and space to enjoy Sydney without any rush.

A couple standing in front of a stunning ivy-covered wall showcasing the best time to see autumn leaves in Sydney. The vibrant foliage transitions from lush green to deep red, creating a picturesque seasonal backdrop. The woman, dressed in a burnt-orange sweater and brown skirt, holds a red leaf while smiling, while the man, wearing a casual flannel shirt and jeans, stands beside her. Fallen leaves on the ground enhance the cozy autumn atmosphere

What’s the point of autumn if you don’t stop to admire the prettiest views? Sydney and the Blue Mountains absolutely come alive with colour between March and May, and it’s something you have to experience at least once!

Family enjoying a visit to the Breenhold Gardens in Mount Tomah, Blue Mountains.

In the Blue Mountains, head to Mount Wilson, the Cathedral Reserve, or Wentworth Falls for stunning fall foliage. And don’t forget—there are some hidden gems right here in Sydney too if you know where to look. Trust me, you won’t regret chasing the autumn leaves!

A girl who is earingan ochar coloured hat is lookng over at some heritage buildings in The Rocks neighbourhood.
A girl looking over at heritage buildings in The Rocks.

The Rocks is one of Sydney’s oldest and most fascinating than any other neighborhoods, in my opinion! It’s here that the very first permanent dwellings of Sydney were built, and today it’s populated with cafes, heritage buildings, gift shops (perfect if you want to collect some souvenirs), and so much culture!

If you visit The Rocks during weekends, I highly recommend attending the lovely markets that flourish in these cobblestone streets — even locals wait for this! You can browse handmade goods, see street performances, and enjoy locally produced food and drinks. It’s one of the best free things to do in Sydney.

White Rabbit Gallery is tucked away on a quiet back street in Chippendale, and I would argue this gallery is one of Sydney’s best, housing one of the world’s most impressive collections of contemporary Chinese art!

The space is set in a former Rolls-Royce service depot, the four-floor gallery combines crisp white walls with an open-plan layout. The exhibitions focus on works created after the year 2000, diving deep into topics like politics, sexuality, and consumerism.

If you’re someone who loves getting up close to contemporary art that pushes boundaries, you’ll be in your element here. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable, and you can even join one of their tours (at 11 AM and 3 PM on Sundays) to learn more about the works and the artists.

A girl in a red full sleeves top paired with a blue denim jeans is looking over at a beautiful ancient wall of NSW Art Gallery, a top Sydney bucket list activity!

The NSW Art Gallery is right at the top of my Sydney bucket list, of course, I’ve crossed it off now, but it’s truly iconic in every sense! Every Wednesday, from 5:30 PM to 10:00 PM, the gallery offers free access to its exhibitions, along with a variety of events. You can enjoy live performances, workshops, DJ sets, film screenings, and guided tours, all in one vibrant setting. It’s such a great way to experience Sydney’s art scene after hours, and the best part is, there’s a shuttle bus service that makes it super easy to get there and back.

Set on a magnificent site overlooking Sydney Harbour on Gadigal land, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia’s flagship art museums and the state’s leading visual arts institution. It’s one of the finest tourism destinations in Australia and an absolute must-visit for an art and cultural experience.

You are bound to be impressed by the beauty of St Mary’s Cathedral the very first time you see it! Right across from Hyde Park, this stunning Gothic-style church overlooks the Sydney Central Business District. Its two soaring spires, massive sandstone walls, and beautiful stained-glass windows make it a real standout. It’s one of Sydney’s most treasured historic buildings, and when you walk inside, the detailed ceilings and soft light filtering through the windows create such a peaceful, almost magical atmosphere.

I recommend visiting the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia (MCA) if you’re looking to dive into the world of modern creativity right by Sydney’s sparkling Circular Quay. Dedicated to exhibiting, collecting, and celebrating today’s most exciting artists, the MCA is all about showcasing contemporary art in all its bold and boundary-pushing forms.

The building itself is stunning too — a perfect blend of art deco and modern architecture, with sweeping views of the harbour. Inside, you’ll find an ever-changing line-up of exhibitions, thought-provoking installations, and interactive spaces that make art feel fresh, fun, and seriously inspiring. Best of all, general entry is free, making it one of the best culture stops in Sydney, whether you’re a hardcore art lover or just curious to see something different.

I highly recommend spending an evening at this iconic Sydney shopping mall! The stained glass windows and boutique stores featuring luxury brands are the highlights, along with the historic clock displays, a variety of food stalls, and the charming Victorian atmosphere.

Built in the late 1800s and spanning an entire city block, the Queen Victoria Building is one of Sydney’s most beautiful heritage landmarks, and definitely a spot you’ll want to tick off your Sydney bucket list. You’ll find everything from designer shops to little cafes tucked away under soaring domes and grand staircases. Just make sure to check the opening hours before visiting!

Visiting the Royal Botanic Gardens is one iconic Sydney bucket listed item! You’ll find some of the city’s most unique native plant species here, along with peaceful walking paths. The heritage-listed Garden, spread over 30 hectares, sits right on the eastern edge of the Opera House. Stepping into the gardens feels like entering a serene oasis, surrounded by plants that are not only beautiful but truly special to Australia.

It’s free to visit, but if you have a little more time in your one-day Sydney itinerary, I highly recommend joining a walking tour to explore hidden gems like the Japanese Garden and Lotus Pond, and to learn more about the stories behind them.

A lush garden scene with tall palms and dense foliage opens up to a distant view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, showcasing the natural and scenic walks available in Kirribilli, including the path to Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden.

Wendy’s Secret Garden, though no longer a secret, is tucked away in Lavender Bay. This beautiful, lush space was lovingly created by Wendy Whiteley after the loss of her husband, artist Brett Whiteley. It’s filled with winding pathways, towering fig trees, quirky sculptures, and vibrant flowers; every corner feels like a little secret waiting to be discovered.

A Sydney Bucket view of the Darling Harbour.

Darling Harbour is one of Sydney’s most vibrant and lively precincts, packed with waterfront restaurants, family-friendly attractions, parks, museums, and endless entertainment. If you’re looking to add some fun things to your Sydney bucket list, there’s no better place to start than Darling Harbour!

I highly recommend setting aside time to explore these highlights:

  • Relax at the Chinese Garden of Friendship
Step into a serene oasis inspired by traditional Chinese gardens. It’s the perfect spot to unwind amid waterfalls, koi ponds, and beautifully landscaped greenery.
  • Visit the Australian National Maritime Museum
Dive into Australia’s rich maritime history with interactive exhibits, real ships you can board, and fun activities for all ages.
  • Have Fun at Darling Quarter Playground
If you’re travelling with kids, this is one of the best playgrounds in the city, with water games, climbing ropes, and plenty of space to run around.
  • Bar Hop at Cockle Bay Wharf
Lined with lively bars and waterfront restaurants, Cockle Bay Wharf is the perfect place to enjoy a drink (or two) while taking in the harbour views.
  • Watch the Fireworks
Every Friday and Saturday night, Darling Harbour lights up with an incredible fireworks show — a free and fun way to end your evening!
  • Snap a Selfie at Madame Tussauds
Meet Hollywood celebrities, Aussie legends, and superheroes (well, their wax versions) at Madame Tussauds Sydney. It’s a quick but super fun visit!

If you’re after one of Sydney’s most iconic coastal views, you have to add Hornby Lighthouse to your Sydney bucket list! Located at South Head in Watsons Bay, this bright red and white striped lighthouse has been standing tall since 1858, guiding sailors safely into Sydney Harbour.

After being closed for a year for restoration, Hornby Lighthouse is now looking better than ever! The best way to see it is by doing the 1.7km South Head Heritage Trail — a relatively easy walk that usually takes around 45 minutes. Trust me, the sweeping harbour views and that picture-perfect lighthouse at the end are so worth it!

Beluah Street in Kirribilli!

Kirribilli has always been one of my favourite neighbourhoods to wander through, especially in spring, when the jacaranda trees explode into bloom and the streets turn into a sea of purple petals.

Sydney CBD from Kirribilli, with the Harbour bridge on the left an the Sydney Opera house in the front!
Credit: Destination NSW

Just three kilometres north of the CBD, this harbourside gem is packed with timeless estates, beautiful waterfront views, and a relaxed, breezy vibe. It’s also where you’ll find Kirribilli House, the official Sydney residence of the Prime Minister, and Admiralty House, the Governor-General’s Sydney base.

Stunning aerial capture of Palm Beach, NSW, highlighting turquoise waters and lush greenery

Palm Beach is about a 50-minute drive from Sydney CBD, and the Barrenjoey Lighthouse hike there is one of the best short trails if you love watching sunsets like me! Once you walk the trail and reach the top of the lighthouse, you’re treated to stunning 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, the Central Coast stretching into the distance, and the Northern Beaches coastline!

If you do this hike between May and November, you’ll also have a much higher chance of spotting migrating humpback whales!

I’ve created a full guide that explains the hike in the simplest way possible. It’ll be your best friend if you’re adding this adventure to your Sydney bucket list!

Tucked away in the old screening room of Sydney’s heritage-listed Paramount House, Golden Age Cinema and Bar brings a touch of old-school glamour back to movie nights.

Settle into the plush art deco chairs, grab a craft cocktail or a glass of wine from the intimate bar, and enjoy everything from cult classics to new indie releases, all handpicked for serious movie lovers. Golden Age feels like a secret Sydney locals are happy to share — but only if you’re cool enough to appreciate it.

If you’re looking for a stylish, cosy spot to spend an evening, I recommend adding it on your Sydney bucket list!

Auburn Botanic Gardens, located about 30 minutes west of Sydney’s CBD, covers 9.2 hectares and features a range of themed landscapes. You can explore the popular Japanese Garden, complete with ornamental bridges, waterfalls, and a koi-filled pond. The gardens also include a native rainforest, a formal rose garden, and a fauna reserve where you can spot native animals like kangaroos and emus.

The Cherry Blossom Festival, held every year, is one of the garden’s biggest attractions, drawing visitors to see the blooming pink flowers. There are picnic areas, walking trails, and shaded spaces, making it a great spot for a relaxing day out. Entry is free outside of special events.

Shelly Beach is located in Manly and is a great spot to add to your Sydney bucket list, especially if you’re interested in snorkelling or scuba diving. The calm, clear waters here are part of a protected marine reserve, making it an ideal place to spot colourful fish, coral, and even the occasional wobbegong shark.

It’s an easy 10-minute walk from Manly Beach along the coastal path, and there are BBQ facilities, picnic spots, and a café nearby, making it a great place to spend a few relaxed hours by the water!

Wylie’s Baths is a heritage-listed ocean tidal pool located just south of Coogee Beach. Opened in 1907, it’s one of Sydney’s oldest and most scenic sea pools, offering sweeping views of the coastline and Wedding Cake Island. The pool is popular for lap swimming, relaxing, and sunbathing, with facilities like changing rooms, showers, and a small café on-site.

There’s a small entry fee ($3), and it’s open year-round, making it a great spot to experience Sydney’s coastal swimming culture.

Bronte Baths is one of Sydney’s most iconic and Instagrammable ocean pools, carved into the cliffs at the southern end of Bronte Beach. Best of all, it’s completely free to visit. Bronte Baths is also right on the famous Bondi to Coogee Coastal Walk!

It’s big enough for laps if you want a workout, but also shallow enough on one side for kids and casual swimmers to enjoy. You’ll find benches carved into the surrounding rocks, perfect for sitting and soaking up the sea breeze after a swim.

The Australian National Maritime Museum is one of Sydney’s major cultural attractions, located right on the waterfront at Darling Harbour. It offers a deep dive into Australia’s maritime history, from Indigenous voyaging traditions to naval battles and modern-day ocean science.

I recommend exploring historic ships like the HMAS Vampire, climbing aboard a replica of Captain Cook’s HMB Endeavour, and checking out exhibitions covering topics like immigration, surfing, and naval warfare.

General admission is free for the permanent galleries, but tickets are needed if you want to explore the vessels or see special exhibitions.

Hyde Park Barracks is a UNESCO World Heritage-listed landmark. Built in 1819, it once housed convicts, immigrants, and asylum seekers, offering a rare glimpse into Australia’s early colonial history.

Today, it’s a fascinating museum where you can walk through recreated living spaces, listen to personal stories from the past through immersive audio guides, and even see original artifacts uncovered on-site. It’s located right in the heart of the city, making it an easy and essential stop if you’re exploring Sydney’s historic side.

Eateries for Your Sydney Bucket List!

These are my top recommendations as a local for all things food and drinks!

First up is Bar 83, the highest bar in Sydney! Located 83 floors above the city in Sydney Tower, it’s known for its incredible views and stylish retro interiors. I recommend coming here for sunset cocktails, date nights, or just enjoying a drink while watching the city light up. They also have a creative menu with signature cocktails and a small but classy food menu if you feel like staying longer.

Next up is Barangaroo House, one of Sydney’s coolest waterfront dining spots! Spread across three levels, each with its own vibe, it’s perfect whether you’re after casual drinks or a full dining experience. On the ground floor, House Bar is great for laid-back cocktails and snacks by the water. Level One is Rekōdo Restaurant and Vinyl Bar, where you can enjoy Japanese-inspired dishes and a live DJ spinning vinyl records. Head up to Smoke Rooftop Bar for epic sunset views, great cocktails, and a stylish atmosphere. It’s a fantastic spot to eat, drink, and enjoy Sydney’s harbour vibes!

A lively scene from the Carriageworks Night Market at Vivid Sydney, filled with gourmet food, artisan vendors, and an ambient glow of colorful lights.
Credit: Destination NSW

If you’re looking to experience Sydney’s local food scene, the Carriageworks Farmers Market is a must-visit! Held every Saturday from 8 AM to 1 PM, this vibrant market is known for its fresh, seasonal produce, artisan breads, organic meats, and gourmet treats—all sourced directly from farmers and producers across New South Wales.

It’s located inside the historic Carriageworks precinct in Eveleigh, giving the market a unique, urban atmosphere. Expect to find everything from farm-fresh veggies and handmade cheeses to pastries, coffee, and specialty foods you won’t find in regular supermarkets. Entry is free, and it’s a great spot to grab breakfast, brunch, or just stock up on delicious local products!

A woman enjoys a green juice by the window at a cozy café with ocean views in Kirribilli, capturing a brunch experience in celsius coffee co.: a Sydney bucket list cafe!

Celsius Coffee Co is a cozy waterfront café tucked away in Kirribilli, right next to the ferry terminal. Known for its stunning views over the harbour, this hidden gem is a local favourite for breakfast and brunch. The café is small but full of charm, with a menu featuring classics like smashed avocado, creative toasties, fresh pastries, and great specialty coffee. Thanks to its glass walls, nearly every seat comes with beautiful water views, making it a perfect, relaxing stop whether you’re starting your day or grabbing a mid-morning coffee break.

It’s a popular spot, so getting there early is a good idea, especially on weekends!

Opera Bar is one of Sydney’s most iconic waterfront venues, sitting right at the base of the Sydney Opera House. With unbeatable views of the Harbour Bridge and Circular Quay, it’s a must-visit spot for a casual drink, long lunch, or a sunset cocktail.

The menu features a range of Australian wines, beers, and seasonal cocktails, paired with fresh seafood, share plates, and light meals!

If you’re on the hunt for some of the best eats in Sydney, Chinatown in Haymarket needs to be on your list. Especially if you’re a chicken lover, this place is heaven for you! The flavours here are as close to the authentic street markets of China as you’ll get without hopping on a plane, packed with that perfect umami punch.

For some specific spots to check out: grab the curry fish balls at Kowloon Cafe (an absolute must-try!), feast on the tender lamb skewers at The 1980s When I Was a Child, and don’t miss Milk Flower for their dreamy vegetarian desserts.

Cafe Sydney is one of the city’s most iconic dining spots, sitting high above Circular Quay with unbeatable views of Sydney Harbour. The menu focuses on modern Australian cuisine, showcasing premium seafood, top cuts of meat, and fresh seasonal produce.

I’ve heard the Sydney Rock Oysters, the grilled Swordfish, and the Lamb Backstrap are absolute must-tries. For dessert, the Chocolate Mousse comes highly recommended. The cocktail list is also worth exploring too!

Sean’s Bondi is a legendary restaurant right by Bondi Beach, perfect if you want that true Aussie coastal dining experience. It’s a compact, 45-seater venue, but don’t worry, you can opt for takeout and enjoy outdoors, which is what I prefer!

The roast chicken is a standout classic here, and the seafood dishes—especially the grilled fish, are always top-notch. It’s all about simple flavors done really, really well.

You can’t go wrong with an evening at one of Sydney’s local breweries! Some of these spots have stood the test of time, drawing crowds just like they did when they first opened. Our top pick is Young Henrys, a local favorite! If you’re after award-winning brews, Mountain Culture Beer Co (a two-time medalist at GABS Hottest 100) is a must-try. And if you’re into a retro vibe, with interiors straight out of the 1980s, head to the Bob Hawke Beer & Leisure Centre!

Discover quirky cafés, live music, and street art in the “busiest suburb” of Sydney! Well, you will find some of the most loved locally successful flourishing businesses here. And, if you like nightclubbing, you will fit just right in!

Here are my top recommendations for eateries:

  • The Courthouse Hotel
  • The Erko (dog-friendly)
  • GIgI Pizzeria
  • Pleasure Club

Sydney Bucket List: FAQs

I’ve tried answering some of the questions often asked about the best things to do in Sydney!

What is Sydney Best Known for?

Sydney is most famous for its pristine beaches, the Opera House, the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and amazing zoos!

How Many Days to Spend in Sydney?

For a first-timer, I would suggest at least 3-5 days in this beautiful city! However, if you are working with limited time, this is how to plan the perfect day in Sydney.

What to Do in Sydney in Three Days?

In three days, you can experience a great mix of Sydney’s icons, beaches, and hidden gems. Spend your first day exploring the Sydney Opera House, Royal Botanic Gardens, and The Rocks, with a ferry ride to Manly.

On day two, start early at Bondi Beach and walk the stunning Bondi to Coogee coastal trail.

Save your third day for a bridge climb, a visit to Wendy’s Secret Garden, or relaxing at Barangaroo. Sydney makes it easy to balance adventure and slow travel.
