THIS SNOWY MOUNTAINS ITINERARY IS PERFECT FOR A THREE-DAY WINTER ESCAPE FROM SYDNEY! ❄️
The Snowy Mountains are one of NSW’s most popular winter destinations, home to iconic ski resorts like Thredbo, Perisher, and Charlotte Pass. In the colder months, you can hike snow-blanketed Mount Kosciuszko (Australia‘s highest mountain), ski or snowboard across 1,245 hectares of snow (the largest skiable area in the Southern Hemisphere), and watch the famous Flare Run light up the slopes on Saturday nights!

I’ve visited the Snowies twice, and on my most recent trip with my friends, I fell in love with it all over again. So, since you’re already planning your adventure, let’s skip the convincing and dive straight into the itinerary!

This 3-day Snowy Mountains itinerary includes a scenic road trip from Sydney to Thredbo, a day trip to Perisher, snow adventures, personal tips, and accommodation suggestions to make the most of your trip!

Where are the Snowy Mountains?

Crowds gather at the base of a snowy ski slope in the Snowy Mountains, with families and skiers preparing for their day.

The Snowy Mountains, or the Snowies, as Aussies refer to them, are one of the top destinations to visit in New South Wales. This beautiful alpine region is known for its snow-covered peaks in winter and adventure-filled landscapes year-round.

If you’re starting from Sydney, a road trip to the Snowies will take around five and a half hours (roughly 490 km), and from Canberra, it’s a much shorter drive of about 2.5 hours (around 210 km).

What is the Best Time to Visit the Snowy Mountains?

A person in winter gear sits atop large snow-dusted boulders under a bright blue sky in the Snowy Mountains, adding adventure to your snowy mountains itinerary.

While the Snowy Mountains are a fantastic destination year-round, I highly recommend visiting during winter, especially in July or August.

However, if you prefer milder weather and different outdoor adventures, spring is a great time to visit. You’ll find opportunities for horse riding, mountain biking, trout fishing, and bushwalking through blooming alpine landscapes.

Since this guide focuses on winter, you’ll find it packed with tips for making the most of your snowy adventures, from skiing and snowboarding to soaking in the mountain air after a day on the slopes.

Where to Stay in Snowy Mountains

If this is your first trip to the Snowy Mountains, a major question you might be having right now is where to stay here. While the accommodation here isn’t exactly cheap, I recommend looking just outside the main village areas to find great deals.

I’ve found some great options! But if I had to narrow it down to my top three, these would make the list:

  • Budget: NRMA Jindabyne Holiday Park – A cozy and affordable hotel with simple cabins to a Snow Gum Cabin (with a private bathroom), and even studios equipped with air-conditioning, TV, a patio, and a handy kitchenette. It’s just a few minutes’ drive from the Kosciuszko National Park trailheads. A perfect choice for backpackers and budget-conscious travelers!
  • Mid-Range: Chalet Jindabyne – A chic and modern-style hotel with interconnected family rooms and fun bunk beds for kids, located in Jindabyne just steps away from the Mount Kosciuszko Summit Trail. It’s perfect for families!
  • Luxury: Lake Jindabyne – For the best location in town, I recommend this stunning hotel. It’s within walking distance of supermarkets, restaurants, cafés, bars, and the Kosciuszko chairlift! With a spa and landmark views, it’s perfect for big families.

Our 3-Day Snowy Mountains Itinerary

Let’s jump into the itinerary! If you love snow, adventure, and nature at its best, this 3-day Snowy Mountains itinerary is designed for you!

Day 1: Scenic Lookouts & Reaching Thredbo

A group of friends smiles for a selfie with a scenic view of natural hot springs and lush forests, showing the fun stops you can explore when learning how to get to Snowy Mountains from Sydney.

5.00 AM: As I mentioned earlier, I highly recommend prepping your essentials the night before and being ready to hit the road early the next morning. We left Sydney at 5:00 AM, and I suggest you do the same. Leaving any later, especially during peak season, means you’ll likely run into traffic as more travellers head towards the snow.

Stop 1: Long Point Lookout (Tallong)
Just outside the small village of Tallong, Long Point Lookout offers beautiful views over the Shoalhaven River Gorge. I highly recommend watching the sunrise here! It’s a short detour from Marulan (about 5 km off the main road), with a small car park and an easy walking trail.

Stop 2: Mount Ainslie Lookout (Canberra) – Optional
As you head toward the Snowy Mountains, stretch your legs at Mount Ainslie Lookout in Canberra. It’s a great panoramic stopover where you can see Anzac Parade lining up with Parliament House, all backed by the Brindabella Ranges. It’s perfect for a quick photo stop before you continue your journey.

11.30 AM: Aim to reach Cooma, often called the capital of the Snowy Mountains, before midday. Cooma offers some interesting stops, including the heritage-listed Railway Museum, unique lookout points, and the Yarrangobilly Caves — some of Australia’s most stunning limestone formations. It also makes a great lunch stop!

The shop, Ski Co, that I mentioned earlier is located in Cooma. You can grab snow chains and other essentials. However, to maximise your rental time on snow gear, I recommend picking up your equipment closer to Thredbo or Jindabyne.

1.30 PM: The Yarrangobilly Caves are among the most beautiful limestone caves in Australia, known for their lofty chambers, intricate formations, and the bonus of a natural thermal pool nearby.

3.30 PM: From Cooma, it’s about an hour’s drive to Thredbo. While Jindabyne is the main hub most travellers pass through, we chose to continue straight to Thredbo for the ultimate winter experience.

For some beer and great food, the Friday Flat Bar & Bistro is a great option, it’s pretty popular too!

7.00 PM: Every Saturday night during winter, Thredbo comes alive with its famous flare run and fireworks show. Professional snowboarders and expert skiers make their way down the Supertrail, each carrying a glowing flare, and it’s absolutely incredible to watch! Right after that, the skies above Thredbo light up with a vibrant fireworks display that can be seen from almost anywhere in the village. It’s a magical experience and a must-see if you’re visiting during the snow season!

Day 2, Option 1: Mount Kosciuszko Walk

8.00 AM: The Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk is one of Australia’s most iconic alpine hikes, and in winter, the trail is completely covered in snow.

The hike starts just beyond the top of the Kosciuszko Express Chairlift, which takes you up from Thredbo Village. From there, the trail stretches 6.5 km each way across snow-covered walkways and gentle ridgelines, passing by snow-blanketed boulders and open alpine terrain all the way to Australia’s highest peak at 2,228 m.

We made it about halfway before turning back around 12:30–1:00 pm. The full return hike usually takes 4 to 6 hours, depending on the conditions and your pace.

Be sure to check the chairlift closing times before you go — if you miss the last one down, you’ll need to hike or ski back to the village. We literally caught the final lift! Before heading down, we grabbed a hot chocolate at Eagles Nest (Australia’s highest restaurant at 1,937 m) — highly recommend adding marshmallows!

If you only hike partway and make it back by around 1 pm, you’ll likely have time to catch the free Thredbo shuttle from the base station and head to Village Square for some afternoon adventure activities (I’ll cover those in the next section). The shuttle usually runs every 10 to 15 minutes and loops around key spots in the village, so it’s super easy to hop on.

On the other hand, if you decide to do the full summit hike, it’ll take most of the day, especially with snow underfoot. By the time you return, grab a bite, and catch the lift down, you’ll probably be ready to rest, refuel, and call it a day.

Day 2, Option 2: Snowboarding/ Skiing Class + Adventure Pass

A woman sits on snowy rocks while another person stands on a rustic wooden bridge in the Snowy Mountains, illustrating picturesque stops and scenes you’ll experience while learning how to get to Snowy Mountains from Sydney.

If you’re keen to try skiing or snowboarding, book a lesson with Thredbo’s Snowsports School; it’s one of the best in Australia! Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your technique, they have lessons for everyone. We did their Adult Group Lessons (for ages 15+), which run for two hours at 9:15 am, 11:20 am, and 2:00 pm and take place near Friday Flat. Although we didn’t master the technique perfectly, it was still a lot of fun. I hope you have better luck than us!

To join any lesson, you’ll need a valid lift pass, so it’s best to book your pass and lesson online in advance. If not, you can also pick them up from the kiosks at the base of the lifts at Friday Flat. Just be sure to arrive at least 45 minutes early (especially for the morning sessions) to collect your MyThredbo card and gear. There’s often traffic leading into the resort, so factor that in if you’re heading to an early class.

Don’t have your own gear? No worries — you can hire everything you need right at Friday Flat. Thredbo Rentals offers skis, snowboards, boots, jackets, pants, helmets, and more. Booking your gear in advance is a good idea, especially on weekends and holidays, to save time and avoid queues.

After your lesson, you can grab a bite at the Friday Flat Bar and Bistro or make your way to Village Square, where there are more dining and café options. If you’re not up for the walk, Thredbo offers free shuttle buses that run regularly throughout the resort.

These are especially handy during peak winter months when parking fills up quickly — we recommend leaving your car at one of the designated parking areas near Friday Flat early in the day and using the shuttle to move around.

If you’re not planning to ski or snowboard for the rest of the day, the Winter Adventure Pass is a fun and flexible way to explore more of the village. It includes several great experiences:

  • Merritts Gondola Ride: A scenic ride with incredible alpine views — perfect for non-skiers or anyone who wants to soak up the snowy landscape from above.
  • Alpine Coaster: The Southern Hemisphere’s first-ever year-round Alpine Coaster, this thrilling ride lets you control your own speed along a 1.5 km track of twists, turns, tunnels, and bridges. It costs $15 per person, but you can avail discounts when you book online!
  • Thredbo Leisure Centre Access: Wind down your day with a swim in the heated pool, a session at the gym, or just some indoor fun — great for families too.
  • Alpine Bungee Trampolines: Located at the Valley Terminal, these trampolines offer a high-adrenaline experience for all ages and abilities. Open Thursday to Sunday during the winter season (daily during school holidays), no prior bookings are required. Simply visit the Alpine Bungee Trampolines and get your bounce on!

6 PM: After a full day on the snow or exploring Thredbo’s alpine activities, it’s time to relax. If you’re staying at the Thredbo Alpine Hotel (or any nearby stay with a sauna and heated pool), take advantage of the facilities and unwind for the evening!

  • Wildbrumby Schnapps Distillery: Famous for its award-winning schnapps and locally crafted spirits. The setting is gorgeous, and it’s a great place to warm up with a tasting or a cozy meal.
  • Jindabyne Brewing: A local microbrewery that’s perfect for beer lovers and foodies. Enjoy a casual evening with craft beers, lake views, and a laid-back vibe.

Day 3: Lake Jindabyne + Half Day Tour to Perisher

A person in a bright red jacket stands on rocky shores, gazing at a calm lake with Snowy Mountains in the distance.

7.00 AM: If you’re an early riser, start your morning with a sunrise at Lake Jindabyne; it’s a 33-minute drive from Thredbo. If mornings aren’t your thing, save this stop for sunset before you head back to Sydney.

There are plenty of quiet, scenic spots around the lake where you can unwind, but Rushes Bay is one of the prettiest!

If you wish to spend more time here, walk along the Foreshore Walkway. The full walk is around 7km return, the terrain is mostly flat, and teeming with birdlife!

11.00 AM: From there, head to Perisher for a half-day tour, especially if you didn’t get enough snow time in Thredbo or missed out on snowshoeing. This tour often includes areas like Mount Wheatley and Guthega, both offering quieter trails, stunning snow-covered landscapes, and fewer crowds than the main resort area.

Guthega is part of the massive Perisher Ski Resort, the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, and I highly recommend exploring the region!

If you’re travelling with kids or simply want to have more snow adventure, stop by Tube Town, a designated toboggan and snow play area on Pipers Ridge, just near the car park. We rented our toboggan from the shop directly opposite. It was super convenient.

If you’d rather wind down before heading home, treat yourself to some relaxation at the Day Spa at The Man from Snowy River Hotel. It’s centrally located in Perisher Valley and offers a lovely way to soothe those post-hike or post-ski muscles.

Plan your trip back keeping in mind the closing times for rental stores, especially if you’ve hired snow chains or ski gear. Many stores close by 5 pm, and late returns can incur extra fees.

Tips for Your Snowy Mountains Winter Trip!

Tips For A Snowy Mountains Trip

Here are certain tips that will come in handy for your trip to the Snowy Mountains!

1. The Snowy Mountains are around 5–6 hours from Sydney, so an early start is key. We hit the road at 5 AM, which gave us time for scenic pit stops, food breaks, and still reaching the mountains by afternoon, ready for snow adventures without feeling rushed.

2. If you’re driving, a 4WD or AWD vehicle is highly recommended. They offer better traction on snowy, winding roads, and you won’t be required to carry snow chains. We rented our 4WD from Sixt, but there are several car rental companies to choose from.

3. Snow chains are mandatory for all 2WD vehicles during winter months, and while not required for 4WDs, they’re recommended. You can hire chains at local towns like Cooma or Jindabyne — just make sure to get there before rental shops close for the day. Only use chains when road signs direct you to or if traction is low. And don’t forget to remove them once you’re back on clear roads — they can damage your car if left on too long.

4. We recommend renting snow pants, jackets, and shoes from Monster Depot Ski Hire. We got 40% off on our ski gear there, and it was such a great deal! For chain hire, we suggest Ski Co, they’re fantastic too.

However, if you want to make the most of your rental period, it’s better to rent from a shop close to your accommodation. You can also pick up hand warmers and snow goggles at both of these places!
