Affordable Accommodation In Hobart: Guide to the best areas to stay in Hobart
There are five main areas to look for places to stay in Hobart: Hobart CBD, North Hobart, South Hobart, Battery Point, and West Hobart. And in my opinion, Hobart CBD and North Hobart are the best areas to stay in Hobart, read more to see why!
Hobart CBD
Hobart CBD is the perfect place to stay for first-time visitors, offering a central location with stunning waterfront views and easy access to iconic attractions like Salamanca Market with a mix of luxury and cheap accommodation in Hobart.
We stayed in hostels here during our first visit as students and found Hobart CBD to be the perfect base for day trips to places like Bruny Island, especially if you want to experience attractions and activities in Hobart and surrounds without a car.
North Hobart
North Hobart is a trendy and budget-friendly area known for its vibrant food scene, independent cinemas, and emerging nightlife. Just a short walk or a quick bus ride from the city center, it’s a great spot for travelers who want a lively atmosphere without the higher price tag of the CBD.
Battery Point

Battery Point is one of Hobart’s most charming and historic neighborhoods, known for its quaint 19th-century cottages, well-preserved Georgian and Victorian architecture, and peaceful village feel. Just south of the CBD, it offers a perfect blend of history, charm, and convenience, all within a short stroll of Salamanca Market and the waterfront.
We grabbed breakfast at Jackman & McRoss at the corner of Hampden Rd here and loved it!
South Hobart
South Hobart is a leafy, residential suburb with Mount Wellington as its backdrop, offering a peaceful escape just 3km from the city center. Known for its Georgian architecture and home to Australia’s oldest brewery, Cascade Brewery, it’s a great spot for travelers looking to stay in a quiet, local area with easy access to nature, hiking trails, and nearby waterfront views.
West Hobart

West Hobart is a peaceful, off-the-beaten-track neighborhood nestled in the hills just outside the city center. It’s a great spot for travelers looking to experience Hobart like a local, have a great base for exploring the outdoors, with scenic hikes up Mount Wellington, the hidden beauty of Myrtle Gully Falls, and peaceful picnics at Knocklofty Reserve—all just minutes away.
