Plan your perfect getaway with our see it all 5 day Gold Coast Itinerary, exploring the best beaches, theme parks, experiences, and nightlife!

Golden beaches, buzzing nightlife, wildlife encounters, and iconic theme parks make the Gold Coast a must-visit destination in Australia. We visited the Gold Coast with friends back in 2019. For our anniversary a couple of years ago and recently in September with our family as well, from sunrise beach walks and koala cuddles to swimming with turtles, theme parks, and a day trip to Brisbane, we have done it all.

That’s why we recommend spending 5 days on the Gold Coast to enjoy all the highlights. But if you’re short on time, don’t worry, we’ve also included a 3-day Gold Coast itinerary at the end, packed with just as much fun and adventure!

In this guide, we’ll share the main hotspots to check out each day, where to eat, best places to stay, and an optional day trip to Brisbane on your last day (sometimes it’s cheaper to fly out from there!)

Our Map of Gold Coast at a Glance

The Gold Coast is truly one of a kind, offering an incredible mix of experiences for every type of traveller. It’s made up of four distinct areas: the Southern Beaches, known for their golden sands and laid-back surf culture; lively Surfers Paradise, packed with nightlife, shopping, and endless things to do in Surfers Paradise; the lush Hinterland, where rainforest trails and scenic lookouts await; and, of course, the world-famous theme parks, home to thrilling rides and family-friendly fun.

In this itinerary, you’ll explore at least three of these areas, enjoying pristine beaches, vibrant culture, and fun activities around every corner.

DAY 1- WELCOME TO GOLD COAST

  • Morning: Gold Coast Airport, Paddock Bakery, Burleigh Pavilion
  • Afternoon: Burleigh Head National Park, Burleigh Beach
  • Evening: Burleigh Hill Lookout, Sogno Italian

Aim to get the earlier flight you can to reach the Gold Coast before noon to make the most of your time in Australia’s holiday playground.

Since the airport is quite small, you can grab your bags easily and go over to one of the booths to pick up your pre-booked car. We got ours for ~$350 for 5 days from Discover Cars, which makes it super easy to compare the best car rental prices in one place.

While you can easily use public transport on the Gold Coast, we highly recommend renting a car if you are staying for more than 3 days, as it often more economical and much easier to travel between places on the same day. The 20-minute drive to Burleigh Heads lets you slip into holiday mode almost immediately with a glimpse of coastal living—palm trees, surfers, and sparkling ocean views along the way.

Choose between two local favourites at Burleigh Heads: Paddock Bakery for artisan brunch in a leafy garden, or Burleigh Pavilion for beachside seafood and cocktails with ocean views. For something more upscale, Rick Shores offers modern Asian fusion right on the water, a bit pricier, but in our opinion, totally worth it!

After lunch, we love heading to Burleigh Head National Park for a gentle coastal walk. The trail winds through lush rainforest and rocky headlands, with lookout points that give sweeping views all the way to Surfers Paradise, it’s one of our favourite spots to soak in those classic Gold Coast vibes.

I wouldn’t be doing this Gold Coast Itinerary justice if I didn’t mention Sogno Italian at Mermaid Waters. The Diavola pizza and Pappardelle Ragu are absolute must-tries! And don’t skip the truffle chips with parmesan, they’re incredible. The place is cosy, the vibes are spot on, and it was the perfect way to wind down our first night on the Gold Coast.

DAY 2- LEARN TO SURF AND EXPERIENCE WILDLIFE

  • Morning: Coolangatta Beach
  • Afternoon: Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
  • Evening: Surfers Paradise Nightlife

We started our day with a surf lesson at Coolangatta Beach at 10 AM, and it was such a blast! The waves here are perfect for beginners, the sand is golden, and the water is crystal clear. Falling a few times is all part of the fun, but the feeling of finally standing up on your first wave? Absolutely unforgettable.

After riding the waves, we worked up an appetite and headed straight to Currumbin Beach Vikings Surf Club for lunch. Right on the sand with sweeping ocean views, this spot serves fresh seafood, classic pub fare, and refreshing drinks—a relaxed, Aussie-style lunch that hits the spot every time.

Post-lunch, we made our way to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, where we spent the afternoon immersed in wildlife encounters. From cuddling koalas and feeding rainbow lorikeets to meeting friendly capybaras and kangaroos, there’s something for everyone here. We loved exploring Lost Valley, wandering the Extinction Trail, and catching live shows like the WildSkies Free Flight Bird Show and Aboriginal culture performances. Don’t miss the Lorikeet feeding at 4 PM—it’s a highlight! For a magical evening, you can also experience Astra Lumina, a stunning light and sound journey through the sanctuary.

As the sun set, we headed to Surfers Paradise for an evening of bar hopping and nightlife. The energy here is unmatched, start with sunset sips at a beachfront café or coffee spot, then dive into a guided nightlife tour with DJs, dazzling light shows, and buzzing clubs. From laid-back sunset vibes to high-energy dancing, Surfers Paradise delivers a night you won’t forget.

DAY 3 Swim with Turtles and Explore Surfer Pardise

  • Morning: Cook Islands
  • Lunch: Sheoak Shack
  • Afternoon: Surfers Paradise Beach, SkyPoint Observation Deck
  • Evening: Surfers Paradise foreshore

I ticked off a bucket list experience with my sister here; swimming with turtles on the Cook Islands, a protected marine park just south of Tweed and Coolangatta. Guided by the amazing Keri and our skipper Chris, the day ran seamlessly, even for my sister, who’s only snorkeled once before.

experience part of our Gold Coast Itinerary

The tour provides all equipment, including wetsuits and snorkels (tip: wear your swimwear beforehand, as there are no changing rooms). On the way out, we spotted dolphins and even breaching whales with calves, absolutely surreal!

Once in the water, we swam alongside wild green and loggerhead turtles, colourful fish, starfish, and coral reefs. Keri took incredible underwater photos and made sure everyone felt safe and included. It’s truly one of the most magical things to do on the Gold Coast.

Right opposite the road we found Sheoak Shack Café! Its a bohemian gem loved by locals and reminded me of the cute shacks in Goa. Stop by for a slow lunch with fresh, organic dishes, hearty seafood, and colourful salads.

We were really tired and needed a nap after the eventful morning but if you have some more energy head to Surphers Paradise to relax on the sand, or another dip in water as you soak in the vibrant beach atmosphere. Later, you can visit SkyPoint Observation Deck atop the Q1 Tower, Australia’s tallest residential building. From 230 meters above the city, enjoy breathtaking views of the coastline, hinterland, and even Byron Bay on clear days, a must-do experience.

When night falls, switch up the pace with a visit to Miami Marketta, just a short drive from Surfers Paradise. This lively night market captures the creative, community-driven energy of the Gold Coast, with street food stalls, live music, and local art creating a vibrant atmosphere. Grab a drink, sample international dishes, and mingle with locals under twinkling fairy lights, the perfect way to wrap up your evening with flavor and fun.

DAY 4 – Explore The Iconic Gold Coast Theme Parks

  • Morning: Wet’n’Wild
  • Afternoon: Warner Bros. Movie World or Dreamworld
  • Evening: Edgewater Dining, Longboards Eatery

Stroll along themed streets lined with cafés and meet your favourite characters for a true Hollywood experience.

Alternatively, Dreamworld blends extreme thrill rides, wildlife encounters, and family attractions. For an elegant evening, head to Edgewater Dining in Isle of Capri, where modern Australian cuisine meets stunning waterfront views, the perfect setting to enjoy a glass of wine as the sun dips below the horizon.

If you’re after something more casual, Longboards Eatery & Bar near Surfers Paradise Beach is a local favorite. With its juicy gourmet burgers, fresh seafood, and breezy outdoor seating, it captures that easygoing coastal vibe the Gold Coast is famous for. Whether you’re dining by the canals or near the surf, both spots offer the perfect taste of Gold Coast charm to wrap up your day.
