Exploring Sydney: A Guide for Visiting Parents

Sydney is a beautiful city filled with stunning landmarks, exciting attractions, and artistic scenery that can create unforgettable memories with your parents. We recently had ours over and have curated list of activities to help you plan a fun itinerary for your parents' visit too!


1. Sydney Opera House

Start your adventure with a visit to the iconic Sydney Opera House. This architectural marvel is not only a UNESCO World Heritage Site but also hosts various performances ranging from opera to contemporary dance. Consider taking a guided tour to learn about its fascinating history and design. My parents really like architecture and design, so they loved this tour!


2. Taronga Zoo

Ready to visit the world's most Instagrammable dining spot? Grounds of Alexandria is a must with unique seasonal installations, a vibrant atmosphere, and delicious food options! We have visited plenty of times, but they keep changing the theme each season and with partial parts of the cafe being free to walk through this place can quickly put you in a festive mood!

PS - There is some construction work currently, so parts of the Aquarium are closed, however it's still a really fun experience and value for money combined with the pass


5. Madame Tussauds Sydney

Get up close and personal with lifelike wax figures at Madame Tussauds. From celebrities to historical figures such as Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Albert Einstein and interactive activities, there’s plenty to see and do. 7. Sydney Tower Eye

Take your parents to the Sydney Tower Eye for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. The observation deck is an ideal spot for family photos, and you can also enjoy a delicious meal at the restaurant while overlooking the skyline as well.


PS - Try going for the observation session and 30-60mins before sunset so you can experience the day, dusk and night city views!

If your parents enjoy arts and crafts, consider joining a Mosaic Lamp Making workshop. This engaging experience provides an opportunity to create something beautiful while enjoying quality time together.



9. Fireworks at Darling Harbour

End a perfect day with a spectacular fireworks show at Darling Harbour. The vibrant displays light up the night sky and create a magical atmosphere. You can get the best viewpoints from Cockle Bay Wharf and the Restaurant and Bars in the area. Check out the upcoming firework dates on the official website. Its typically on a Saturday evening!


10. Berry’s Bay Lookout

Take a scenic drive or walk from Waverton station to Berry’s Bay Lookout (a railed easy to access lookout) for stunning views of the harbour. It’s a fantastic spot for photography and enjoying the natural beauty of Sydney. Don’t forget to stop by Grumpy Baker when you’re on this side of town!


Or you can even head to Observatory Hill near the Rocks to enjoy a sunrise/sunset and spend some quality time enjoying the Cityscape.


11. Pylon Lookout

Located at the Sydney Harbour Bridge, the Pylon Lookout offers fascinating exhibits about the bridge’s history and construction. Climb to the top for panoramic views of the Sydney skyline and harbour.  Check out our reel here to see some stunning visuals and Book your experience here.

PS - With over 200 steps and no lift, I would only recommend this for younger/ fit parents!


12. Free Walking Tours

Found this hidden gem in the city at Angel Pl thanks to the tour!


Try out free walking tours from I’m Free Sydney which is a trusted source providing great experiences since 2009 without costing a dime (they work on a pay-what-you-feel basis). You can choose from their various walking tours such as Sydney Sights Free Walking Tour, The Rocks Free Walking Tours or one of their private tours. Even being locals ourselves, we found some unique gems through their tour!


13. Jump on all kinds of public transport

From ferries, trains, light rails to even metros, Sydney public transport offers a unique experience with some of the most beautiful train station views e.g. Circular Quay and routes such as across the harbour to Milsons Point or a longer ferry to Manly!


14. Trip to Blue Mountains

For nature lovers, trip to the Blue Mountains is a must. Our detailed guide will take you through mind-blowing landscapes, including the Three Sisters rock formation and stunning waterfalls. 15. Trip to Port Stephens


Our favourite road trip in NSW! Been here twice already and if you have the time, it's totally worth bringing your parents here over long weekend trip. If you haven't been to the zoo already, you can feed kangaroos, wallabies, and attend the Koala talk at Oakvale Wildlife Park and if your parents are up for it feed and pat strong rays and sharks at Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters. My mom even did the Mount Tomaree Summit hike which I personally feel is one of the best short yet challenging hikes in NSW with the most rewarding views! Unless your parents are fit/ feel comfortable with stairs, heights etc, I would not recommend this.


16. Bondi Beach and Bondi Icebergs

No trip to Sydney is complete without a visit to Bondi Beach. Take a leisurely walk along the beach and enjoy the sun and surf. Don’t forget to check out the famous Bondi Icebergs Club, where you can grab a meal with an ocean view and catch a sunset at Dudley Page Reserve (which offers one of the best sunset views in the whole city!)


17. DFO Shopping

For some retail therapy, visit DFO (Direct Factory Outlet) at Homebush. Here, you’ll find discounted prices on top brands, making it a great place to shop for clothes, accessories, and branded products without breaking the bank. You can find many brands to name few being Burberry, Calvin Klein, Guess, Jimmy Choo, Levi’s, Michael Kors, Nike among others.


18. Shopping at Pitt Street

Head to Pitt Street, one of Sydney's busiest shopping streets. Here, you can explore high-end shops, local boutiques, and busy markets. It’s the perfect way to immerse yourself in Sydney’s shopping culture.


19. Royal Botanic Garden

Visit the Royal Botanic Garden, a tranquil oasis in the heart of Sydney. Explore beautifully landscaped gardens and take in stunning views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Pack a picnic to enjoy among the greenery.


20. Australian Museum

For a dose of culture and education, head to the Australian Museum. This attraction showcases Australia’s natural history and indigenous cultures through fascinating exhibits. It’s an enriching experience that’s suitable for all ages.


21. Art Gallery of New South Wales


Art enthusiasts will love the Art Gallery of New South Wales. With an impressive collection of Australian and international art, the gallery hosts various exhibitions and events throughout the year. Admission is free for the permanent collection, making it an accessible cultural outing.


22. Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk


Experience one of Sydney’s best coastal walks by taking the Coogee to Bondi Coastal Walk. This scenic trail stretches for about six kilometres and offers breathtaking views of the coastline, beaches, and cliffside landscapes. It's a perfect way to enjoy the outdoors with your parents. If you want to try something shorter the Cremorne Point Walk is a great alternative (however no beaches!).


23. Shop for affordable souvenirs at Paddys Market


At the ground level, under Market City in Sydney CBD, there is a speciality market with a mix of souvenir stores, dupes, t-shirts etc. These are likely not all made in Australia but is worth a visit based on what you are looking for!


24. The Rocks


Explore The Rocks, one of Sydney's oldest neighbourhoods. Here, you can find historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and a lively market on weekends. It’s a fantastic area to shop for unique souvenirs and enjoy local cuisine. Book this Ghost Tour at The Rocks. You can also take up a free tour at The Rocks.


25. Sydney Fish Market


For seafood lovers, a visit to the Sydney Fish Market is a must. Sample fresh seafood, enjoy a meal at one of the many eateries, and learn about sustainable fishing practices. It’s a unique culinary experience that your parents will appreciate.


26. Manly Beach


Spend a day at Manly Beach, where your parents can relax, swim, or try water sports like paddleboarding or kayaking. The beach has a laid-back vibe and plenty of cafes to grab a bite to eat. You can even check out Manly Worm hole or shop at the Manly weekend markets while you’re here!


27. Dolphin or Whale Watching


Depending on the season, from Sydney harbour to the serene waters of Nelson Bay, you are spoiled for options if you want to see these majestic creations. Check out this day trip from Sydney to Jervis Bay to cruise turquoise blue waters, what is known to be the world’s whitest beach and see wild kangaroos and wallabies! Or you can jump on a whale watching cruise from Barangaroo or Darling harbour as well.


PS - I suggest using Sea bands and taking motion sickness tablets no matter your sea sickness tolerance - just to be safe!


28. Evening at Circular Quay

End your trip with an evening at Circular Quay, where you can enjoy stunning views of the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge lit up at night. Consider dining at one of the waterfront restaurants for a memorable farewell dinner.
